"R.B.-169." NAVIGATION RULES FOR INTERNATIONAL AND INLAND WATERS INCLUDING THE GREAT LAKES AND WESTERN RIVERS. Block, R. A. et al. Revised ed. "K" 2008. 277p. Constantly updated with USCG changes. ISBN 1-933186-20-8. The current inland navigational rules went into effect in December 1981 and on the Great Lakes in 1983. The International Collision Regulations (COLREGS) were in effect outside the "lines of demarcation" since 1977. Both sets of rules and their Annexes were amended a number of times since then. All licensed deck officers, operators, and Able Seamen are tested on the "rules of the road" for an original license, license renewal, and raise-of-grade. Coast Guard regulations at 33 CFR 88.05 also require the operator of each self-propelled vessel 12+ meters in length to have a copy of the inland rules on board his/her vessel. The main purpose of this book, which is included as a Chapter in our Able Seaman and Lifeboatman textbook, is to help all persons who must prepare for a Coast Guard exam or license renewal exercise. We believe this is the most thorough book of its type on the market today and can help you master the navigation rules because: We compare the COLREGS with the inland rules on a line-by-line basis and highlight words, phrases, and punctuation where the two versions of the rules differ. We combine the COLREGS and inland rules as unified rules where they are identical to simplify studying the two versions! We explain the meaning of all words and phrases used in the rules. We point out "trick" questions and reveal why they are tricky. We organize questions and answers in a logical order by rule number. We include about 1,200 multiple choice questions with correct answers, explanations and reference to its source. We reviewed and included all "rules of the road" questions in the Coast Guard database as well as diagrams from the Merchant Marine Deck License Examination Illustration Book (MET Stock# BK-678) so you do not need to purchase this book. We cover all current questions used in license renewal exercises. Unfortunately, they still continue to use some outdated questions in these exercises. We furnish a mail-in "Feedback Sheet" so you can keep posted on corrections, comments, changes, and updates. We reference each answer with a rule number so you can check incorrect answers against the text of the rule. We cite USCG question numbers so you can help us correct an occasional incorrect or misleading Coast Guard test question. You benefit from readers' comments on previous editions. We incorporate all inland rules and COLREGS changes to date.

TANKERMAN—ALL GRADES. Block, R. A., Revised Edition “G”. 2006. 352p. ISBN 1-879778-67-X. Published by MET. Changes to Tankerman regulations focus attention on training the Tankerman to perform his duties safely and with regard to protecting the environment. The Coast Guard now requires formal training for Tankerman and merchant marine officers who regularly transfer petroleum and other "dangerous liquids" (DL) and liquefied flammable gases (LFG) that, if released, could harm the environment. This book contains the study material that Tankerman will need to understand to enter the field or to renew their documents. This material also prepares qualified candidates for "Tankerman" type questions that appear on deck and engine license exams with their renewed emphasis on protecting the environment, and safely transferring petroleum and chemical cargoes. This book is updated to comply with changing regulations. Contents: (BK-106C01) The Tankerman in Transition (TMAN) (BK-004C38) Operational Safety Information (OSI)* (BK-004C39) Tank Safety (TS)* (BK-002C19) Fires, Firefighting, and Fire Prevention (FF)* (BK-106C05) Bulk Shipment of Chemicals by Water (BSC) (BK-106C06) Liquefied Flammable Gases (LFG) (BK-001C04) Pollution Control (PC)* [*The asterisk (*) shows a chapter that also appears in other MET textbooks.]
